Students Speed to Success at Annual Pine Car Derbykids at race

April 24, 2025 — Ukiah School

Excitement was in the air and competition was high as students, families, teachers, and community gathered for Ukiah School’s annual Cougar Derby pine car race. The gymnasium transformed into a buzzing racetrack filled with cheers, laughter, and creative wooden cars of every design imaginable.

Dozens of racers of all ages participated, showcasing not only their racing skills but also their craftsmanship and creativity.  Cars designed and built by students and adults filled the gym and heats of races in five competition age groups drew the attention of everyone. This is the fifth year of the competition, and it has grown in popularity and participation each year.  The race highlights student cars and skills learned in their manufacturing and wood shop classes.  It showcases their creative designs and detailed art and brings together the small community in a celebration of imagination and friendly competition.

“It’s amazing to see how proud the kids are of what they built,” said Mr. Allen, the school’s CTE Manufacturing teacher. “They start thinking of designs and shapes months in advance.  They build skills that are put into play with their unique designs.  This event brings engineering, problem-solving, and fun all into one.”

Trophies and prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place racers were created by students in the Manufacturing Shop – 15 in total.  This year the youngest competitor was just under 1 year old with the oldest over 81.  A coveted “Best of Show” trophy is awarded by a select team of community members.

The Ukiah School Board members help to run the event, making it a true community effort.  They host a hotdog and chips BBQ to competitors, help to check-in and coordinate racers, and generally support the students and connect with the community.

Superintendent Orr summed it up best: “Today wasn’t just about racing—it was about learning, creating, and bringing our school community together.”

The Ukiah Cougar Derby continues to be a beloved tradition, and this year’s event proved once again that Oregon students of all ages and locations are doing great things and gaining skills.
